Frequently Asked Questions
How do you store mushrooms?
In the fridge in a paper bag!
Mushrooms need air to remain fresh AND need to stay refrigerated. Best practice? Put those fungi on the top shelf of the fridge where you are likely to see them and not too far back they may freeze accidentally.
Did you forget you put those mushrooms back there and now they look a little worse for the wear? Just add a bit of water to re-hydrate them when cooking and those mushrooms will still be delicious.
How do I prepare these mushrooms?
Saute, Roast, Grill, Pickle, the possibilities are endless!
The most important thing to remember is that mushrooms hold a lot of moisture and have a naturally high water content. This means you can actually use LESS oil or fat than you expect you need as mushrooms don’t burn as easily as you may think.
If you like your mushrooms silky in texture, the moisture released when sauteing will help with that. (Leave a lid on your cooking vessel). Want something a little more caramelized? then make sure to allow that water to evaporate. (Leave the lid off after the initial sautee.)
We love hearing your favorite recipes, and when all else fails ask your market friend who sells Seacoast Mushrooms about their favorite way to cook mushrooms!
How do we grow our mushrooms?
Free from chemicals!
Seacoast Mushrooms has worked for over a decade to design a system with engineered technology that allows us to create a nutritious hardwood substrate, inoculate, grow and harvest all our mushrooms without the use of herbicides or pesticides.
We use vertical growing methods in sealed containers that allow us to create the perfect environment for our fungi without needing to spray them for pests!
This means you get every nutritious part of the mushroom, and none of the chemicals that may be found in pre-packaged mushrooms from other sources.
If it’s Seacoast,
it’s locally grown.
Can I eat the whole mushroom?
Yes!
Some varieties have a stem that can be a different texture than the cap, and some people choose not to eat it, or better yet, use it for something else that highlights the flavor and nutrition without wasting a bit.
Shiitake’s have that beautiful cap that can be sliced and cooked for endless options, but did you know you can save the stems and put it in your next batch of home made broth? Umami notes and Vitamin D? Yes please!
Blue Oyster, Golden Oyster and Maitake all grow on a base that’s absolutely edible, think of it like a broccoli or cauliflower stem, just needs a little more cooking time or a smaller dice.
Do you ship?
Not at this time.
We are a growing business though so if this ever changes we will let you know!
We hand harvest, pack and deliver your mushrooms straight from our Mystic CT farm to restaurants, farmers markets and farm stands throughout the state.
Our dedicated team brings you mushrooms that have been harvested hours rather than days or weeks before like other larger distributors.
Would you like to see Seacoast mushrooms in a restaurant or location near you? Feel free to reach out to eva@seacoastmushrooms.com and tell us where you frequent as a local mushroom lover and maybe we can bring our gourmet mushrooms to you!
